Welcome to the Department of Theatre & Dance at Lamar University.

We have a dynamic department, and one that is friendly and supportive. I am sure you would feel inspired, challenged and encouraged should you decide to study theatre and dance at Lamar. The university is located in Beaumont, Texas, approximately 90 miles from Houston, and affords numerous opportunities for a wide range of artistic and educational experiences.

Our department offers a Bachelor of Science in theatre & dance in which students can select an emphasis in acting, dance or tech/design. Full admission to the university is necessary prior to being admitted as a theatre and dance major. Visit our Prospective Students page for more information regarding admission to the university.

We provide a well-balanced curriculum for students that prepares them for professional careers, to attend graduate school and/or enter a teaching profession. Lamar stages serve as laboratories for training, and students can participate in all phases of our production program, including a wide range of theatrical works and dance concerts. Lamar also maintains a chapter of the national honorary theatrical fraternity, Alpha Psi Omega.

We also offer a number of scholarships and assistantships to aid students in pursuing their degree.

Originally envisioned by Patillo Higgins, treasurer and general manager of the Gladys City Oil, Gas and Manufacturing Company, which was founded in 1892, the town of Gladys City was to be a perfect industrial city, featuring factories, schools, churches, homes, parks and businesses. When the Lucas Gusher blew in on January 10, 1901, there was no more time to be perfect. Quickly, the Gladys City Company began leasing land to businessmen (and some women) who built quick, clapboard buildings to sell goods and services to oilfield workers and their families.

By the early 1970s, nothing much remained of the original Gladys City. In 1975, the re-created Gladys City Boomtown was built on lands once owned by the Gladys City Oil, Gas & Manufacturing Company as a Bicentennial project and in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Lucas Gusher. Once completed, the new Gladys City was given to the State of Texas and is governed by Lamar University. Through a self-guided tour, visitors to Gladys City experience 15 replica buildings filled with objects from the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries that depict life during the first Spindletop oil boom. From a saloon and post office to a general store and livery stable, visitors get a glimpse of what it might have been like to work and live in the historic Spindletop oilfield.

UNIVERSITY DISCOUNT: Students, faculty, staff, retirees and alumni of Lamar University or LIT are admitted free, w/valid ID.

MILITARY DISCOUNT: Active military personnel, including Reservists & National Guard members, receive free admission year-round with a current military ID. During the annual Blue Star Museums program (Memorial Day to Labor Day) sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, the immediate families of active duty military also receive free admission.

Though there is much outdoors to our museum, we do not allow pets except for service animals.

Tours
Gladys City is available for tours for groups of 10 or more on Tuesday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.; Saturday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and Sunday between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Guided tours are given when a tour guide is available; otherwise, it is a self-guided tour.

Special rates for adult groups are $3 each for Adults, $2 each for Adults 60+. Much of the museum complex is wheelchair accessible and benches are provided on the porches of several buildings.

For youth tours, including public and private schools, home school groups, and scout troops, during the regular school year (September-May), admission is free for all youth and one chaperone for every ten students. Additional chaperones pay the regular adult tour admission fee of $3. Admission for youth tours during the summer (June-August) is $1 per person, including youth and adults.

Tour prices for adults, Senior Citizens and youth apply to groups of 10 or more and have called the museum at least 2 weeks in advance. Due to the nature of our events, regular admission prices will apply to event days.

Gladys City can accommodate up to 150 children in one tour. It is requested that large groups have at least one chaperone for every ten children.

Successful clubs are student-initiated and student managed. Sport Clubs fills the void between intramural sports activities and intercollegiate athletics. There is an emphasis on the learning experience for members through their involvement in leadership opportunities. These opportunities include: fundraising, public relations, organizing, administrating, budgeting, and scheduling.

Membership Benefits
Sport Clubs participation enhances the student's overall education. Skills that students learn include time management, writing and implementing their constitution, recruiting members, establishing dues, and gaining team support. The leadership training and opportunities available through active participation with a Sport Clubs team are intended to benefit the participant throughout their lifetime.
