Welcome to the Department of Theatre & Dance at Lamar University.

We have a dynamic department, and one that is friendly and supportive. I am sure you would feel inspired, challenged and encouraged should you decide to study theatre and dance at Lamar. The university is located in Beaumont, Texas, approximately 90 miles from Houston, and affords numerous opportunities for a wide range of artistic and educational experiences.

Our department offers a Bachelor of Science in theatre & dance in which students can select an emphasis in acting, dance or tech/design. Full admission to the university is necessary prior to being admitted as a theatre and dance major. Visit our Prospective Students page for more information regarding admission to the university.

We provide a well-balanced curriculum for students that prepares them for professional careers, to attend graduate school and/or enter a teaching profession. Lamar stages serve as laboratories for training, and students can participate in all phases of our production program, including a wide range of theatrical works and dance concerts. Lamar also maintains a chapter of the national honorary theatrical fraternity, Alpha Psi Omega.

We also offer a number of scholarships and assistantships to aid students in pursuing their degree.

The Lamar University Police Department (LUPD) is on campus to serve you in the protection of your person, your property, and the university's property.

The LUPD is charged with the enforcement of university and systems regulations and all state, local and federal laws. Officers working for the university are licensed peace officers for the state of Texas. They have county-wide jurisdiction per the Texas Education Code Section 51.203.

The University Writing Center is an academic support service that provides all students with free face-to-face or online writing consultations. With two locations - one on the first floor of the Mary and John Gray Library and the other on the first floor of Morris Hall - and staff who are both graduate and undergraduate students, the Writing Center assists students with their writing for any course by guiding students through the entire writing process.

The Writing Center provides personalized consulting in the following areas: understanding the assignment, brainstorming, organizing ideas, revising, editing, and interpreting the graded paper. Our writing conferences actively engage students in identifying and addressing their writing needs so that students improve their composition practices and skills and learn to apply them to various writing tasks and purposes.

In the interest of academic integrity, consultants neither edit nor in any other way correct students' papers for them. Students may seek assistance with non-academic writing as well, such as graduate school applications and scholarship letters.

Our consulting service is beneficial to students of all writing abilities, as any writer can benefit from the collaborative activity of a peer writing conference.

The Writing Center seeks to encourage scholarly activity across campus and provides both independent and in-class workshops each semester in support of such activity. Both writing centers are equipped with Macs and PCs and assistive technology for student use.
